A beautiful festive table needs neither silverware nor extravagant spending. It comes down to a few simple gestures: materials that complement each other, soft light, and that little extra attention that tells your guests they are expected.
1. Start with the linen
The tablecloth is the backdrop of your table: it sets the tone. In ecru, it shows off everything else; in a bolder colour, pink or slate grey for example, it creates the mood of the evening on its own. Think about after the meal, too: a sturdy cloth that is machine washable and barely creases, like the Fez cloth of our Signature tablecloths, lets you enjoy the evening without worrying about stains.
Add cloth napkins, simply folded on the plate or tied with a piece of string. They change everything: a table with cloth napkins instantly looks more thoughtful.
2. Choose a palette
Stick to three colours, no more. For example: the white of the linen, the terracotta of the plates and the green of some foliage. A tight palette gives a sense of harmony, even with mismatched tableware.
3. Mix materials
It is the contrast of materials that makes a table feel warm: embroidered cotton, terracotta, glass, the wood of a bread board, the brass of a candlestick. Don’t hesitate to mix old and new, precious and simple.
4. Take care of the centrepiece
The centrepiece should stay low, so that guests can see and talk to each other. A few olive branches, dried flowers, a bowl of seasonal fruit (figs, pomegranates, clementines) or a table runner are enough to create a lovely line down the middle of the table.
5. Light candles
Nothing creates atmosphere like candlelight. Choose unscented candles, so as not to compete with the meal, and play with different heights: a few tall tapers, a few tea lights.
6. Add a touch for each guest
A handwritten place card, a sprig of rosemary on each napkin, a date placed on the plate… These details cost almost nothing, but they are often what people remember.
A gentle Moroccan touch
For a Moroccan-inspired table that avoids clichés, focus on materials rather than symbols: hand-embroidered linen, engraved tea glasses, terracotta ceramics, a few dates and a bunch of fresh mint. The spirit is there, simply.
